DAISY Recipient November 2024

Amanda Mayfield, Daisy Recipient November 2024

Amanda Mayfield has been a Nurse at RMC since 2006, when she came to work for Jamie Harris. She says, “Jamie Harris was my clinical instructor in nursing school and was the reason I decided to work here.” She is currently a nurse on 5W, and was nominated not once, but TWICE for the same interaction she had with a patient and their family member. This is what her nominator had to say about his experience with Amanda:

“My wife was in the hospital and dealing with a serious illness. I had finally been able to take a break and grab something to eat. My hands shake really bad so it is difficult for me to prepare a plate of food let alone eat after I have fixed it. THIS NURSE saw me struggling to fix a plate and she came over to help. Due to my concern over my wife’s health, I began to cry. THIS NURSE continued to help me. She consoled me also. She asked what I wanted to drink, and then she prepared that as well. I moved to pay for my food and drink and she insisted that she would pay. I could not stop crying because of my concern over my wife’s health. She has struggled with a great deal of issues for several years. THIS NURSE  made sure I was situated and she told me she would come to my wife’s room to meet on her. And she did. She followed through. THIS NURSE  was not responsible for my wife’s care but she came to check on both of us. Later, my wife was moved to ICU and THIS NURSE came to check on my wife there as well. Unfortunately, my wife passed away later. We had been married for 53 years. THIS NURSE called the next day to check on me after my wife’s passing. She also attended her funeral which meant a lot to our family. There is no doubt that THIS NURSE went above and beyond. She took care of me even though I was not a patient. But she also came to check on my wife, while she was a patient…she was not one of THIS NURSE’S patients. THIS NURSE made an impact on me and my family in a way that won’t be soon forgotten.”

Amanda’s kindness was witnessed in the cafeteria, and it made such an impact that a second nomination was submitted:

“On Tuesday, July 9, while in the cafeteria I witnessed a nurse from your facility approach an older gentleman struggling at the salad bar and as I could see her whispering, she took his salad bowl and started to fix it for him. She was completely focused on him and he started crying. She set the bowl down and hugged him, both of them crying. She completely made his meal and walked to the register. She appeared to pay for bus food and walked with him out of the cafeteria. I never seen her get her own food. I was in awe of her kindness and compassion. I had to ask around to find out who she was. If your facility had more like her, it would be a better place.”

Amanda was surprised by her family, friends and the man who nominated her on Wednesday. As they embraced in a hug, Amanda said,” You have no idea the impact you and your wife made on me. I’m glad to know now that the impact of our meeting was made on you and your family as well.”

We’re thankful to have compassionate nurses like Amanda who take the time to meet the needs of people as they see them.
