RMC to Become Second Milk Depot in Alabama for Donated Human Breast Milk

New Mother’s Milk Bank at RMC to Host Ribbon Cutting Ceremony at 2 pm on
Tuesday, January 19th

Regional Medical Center (RMC) will open Alabama’s second milk depot for donated human breast milk on Tuesday, January 19, 2016 at the RMC Women & Children’s Pavilion in Anniston, AL. The donated milk will be pasteurized in Birmingham at the Mothers’ Milk Bank of Alabama and will be distributed to hospitals across the state to be given to medically fragile infants.

A human “milk depot’ where breastfeeding mothers can donate breast milk to give to premature or medically fragile babies in Alabama and across the country is a tremendous benefit for Alabama’s most fragile babies. RMC purchased and will house the deep-freezer unit that will store breast milk donations from women across Northeast Alabama. Any lactating woman can become a donor after being screened at no charge.

RMC is so proud and honored to have been selected by the Mothers’ Milk Bank of Alabama to become only the second ‘milk depot’ or satellite drop-off location for donations of breast milk in the state. Many babies who are born prematurely often have underdeveloped gastrointestinal tracts. For these medically fragile or premature infants, it’s important to offer them the most easily digestible milk so they can continue to grow and thrive. Human milk is much easier for these babies to digest than milk-based formulas derived from cows’ milk or soybeans.

There are only 16 donor milk banks in the United States, according to the Human Milk Banking Association of North America, a professional association that supports non-profit donor human milk banking. The milk donated by Northeast Alabama mothers, after going through a pasteurization and screening process, will be given to medically fragile babies in North Alabama hospitals and even beyond, said Katherine Wood, program coordinator for the Mothers’ Milk Bank of Alabama (MMBA), which is headquartered in Birmingham.

The medical community, and many of RMC’s top obstetricians, says breast milk is best for babies whenever possible. For some of RMC’s tiniest and sickest babies who aren’t able to breastfeed normally and their mothers who aren’t able to pump breast milk for them, the non-profit human milk banks, such as the one opening next week at RMC, are invaluable resources that help babies produce antibodies that are vital in their growth and development.

The milk collected at RMC’s Anniston Milk Depot site will be sent to Birmingham and pasteurized there at the Mothers Milk Bank of Alabama. Once milk is donated, it is pooled with 3-10 other donations to make a target calorie count. Pooling the milk also increases the immunological benefits of the milk. The milk is then pasteurized and distributed to hospital-based (Neonatal Intensive Care Units (NICU’s). If the supply at the MMBA exceeds statewide hospital demand, additional milk supplies will be made available to infants that have gone home from the NICU on pasteurized donor human milk, and to hospitals outside of Alabama.

Screening is important component for donating breast milk. According to Kate Van Meter, RMC’s Director of Marketing, strict screening criteria is in place for accepting, testing and storing donated human breast milk stored at RMC’s Milk Depot.

“In order for mothers to donate breast milk to our accredited milk bank program, they will need to complete a very thorough questionnaire and other necessary forms along with a blood test at a local lab,” Ms. Van Meter said. “Once the paperwork and blood tests are completed, if approved a lactating mother will receive an ID number and can begin dropping off breast milk donations at RMC’s new Milk Depot.”

For babies receiving milk, an equally stringent screening process will be followed and consent process informing mothers of the source of donated breast milk. The milk bank screens potential donors for health reasons. The screening process takes about a week.

Interested women can go to www.mmbal.org, click “How to donate” and download a donation questionnaire and necessary forms.

Healthcare IT News, an industry leading health IT publication, annually ranks Best Hospital IT departments based on nominations and ranks departments based on a number of criteria, including:

The magazine first launched this annual issue in 2011 to pay tribute to those teams on the front lines every day who are working to help their hospitals through one of healthcare’s most challenging and transformative eras, according to Mike Miliard, editor at Healthcare IT News.

According to Pete Furlow, RMC’s Chief Information Officer (CIO), for a relatively small hospital IT department of 20 staff members supporting a hospital with 338 beds, RMC Anniston’s IT department has developed a sense of camaraderie based on close communications and keeping an eye on the goal of improving patient care.

“Our IT department at RMC continuously looks at how we can improve not only technology processes and workflows but also how technology can help us fill any gaps we feel need to fill,” Furlow said. “We consistently reach out to the entire hospital staff, physicians and nursing staff to better understand how we can improve workflows and improve care delivered to our patients.”

Louis Bass, CEO of RMC, said he is proud to congratulate RMC’s CIO, Pete Furlow, and the entire IT department on this high recognition and honor. “The IT team at RMC have had to deal with so many complex issues in recent years as we all learned to adapt from paper-based to technology-based systems. From managing the rollout of electronic records, nursing documents, prescriptions, physician documentation and voice recognition technology for physician note-taking to ensuring Meaningful Use attestation and protecting the integrity and security of our patients, physicians and employee data every day, the RMC IT department plays a vital role in how RMC delivers healthcare to our patients and to the community. RMC Purchases New Leading-Edge VersaCare® Patient Beds for Anniston Hospital

Nursing executives with Northeast Alabama Regional Medical Center (RMC) today announced the purchase of more than 235 new state-of-the-art inpatient medical/surgical patient beds for the 338-bed Anniston facility. The new VersaCare© beds are provided by Hill-Rom, a worldwide manufacturer and provider of medical technologies and related services for the health care industry.

A total of 235 beds were purchased as part of the overall contract, with 30 beds scheduled to arrive at the hospital on Tuesday, July 7th. Complete in-service training for the clinical staff begins next week. The remaining beds will be delivered in stages as they are produced by Hill-Rom during FY2016 and FY2017, according to Elaine Davis, R.N., Chief Nursing Officer and VP of Patient Services.

Ideal for mid to high-acutiy patients, VersaCare beds are integrated with a host of safety-promoting, leading-edge technologies controlled through a simple, intuitive interface. Key features of note on the new VersaCare beds include: a 3-level Bed Exit Alarm with advanced sensitivity to help reduce patient falls related to unsupervised bed egress; SafeView® Alerts running lights to give caregivers improved visual of key conditions of the bed; and Skin-safety surfacing to mitigate pressure, shear, friction and moisture – all factors that contribute to pressure ulcers on patients.

These new state-of-the-art inpatient beds are vital to bolstering RMC’s mission to provide the highest quality health care for patients and fulfill a promise made to clinical teams to provide an ergonomically safe environment that reduces strain placed on them during patient care, said Chris Word, RN Nurse Manager Observation/8W, one of the RMC team members who was part of the review committee that assisted in the inpatient bed selection process.

“Every day our caregivers have increased demands to elevate the safety and standards of care for our patients,” said Word. “The ergonomic design of these beds with optimal low bed-height technology capabilities will free caregivers from some of the physical demanding labor involved with constant patient repositioning so that our nursing teams can focus on helping patients heal, while continuing to comply with all of our clinical safety protocols.”

As part of this purchase, a new Hill-Rom NaviCare® nurse call system will also be considered to compliment the new VersaCare beds. The old inpatient beds will be “traded-in” to Hill-Rom with several beds being donated to Jacksonville State University’s clinical simulation lab on the campus of RMC Jacksonville.
