A LEGO Set That Makes Imaging Less Scary for Kids? RMC Just Brought It to Anniston

Regional Medical Center and Starlight Foundation Bring New MRI LEGO® “Education  Sets” to Help Reduce Anxiety for Pediatric Patients

ANNISTON, Ala. — Regional Medical Center (RMC) has introduced a new, child-friendly resource across its imaging departments designed to make MRI and CT scans less frightening for young patients. Through a partnership with the nonprofit Starlight Foundation, RMC has received 10 MRI “education sets”, specialized LEGO® kits internationally recognized for significantly reducing pediatric anxiety during imaging procedures.

The models, which allow children to explore a miniature, movable MRI machine before their own scan, have been shown to reduce pediatric anxiety by up to 96% and a physician reported a decrease in the need for general anesthesia or sedation by 42%. The sets help children understand what the machine looks like, how it works, and what they can expect to hear or feel, creating a more predictable and empowering experience. This educational model, part of the LEGO® “Learning Through Play” initiative, has supported over one million children with their scans over 4 continents since being introduced in 2023.

“These kits are a simple but incredibly effective tool,” said Thomas Abernathy, Director of Imaging Services at RMC. “For a child who may be scared or overwhelmed, being able to touch and interact with a model can make all the difference. We’re grateful to Starlight for helping us bring this resource to families in our community.”

RMC’s imagination sets will be placed throughout the health system, so that children receiving scans across any campus will have access to the same comforting resource. The interactive models feature a screening room, waiting room, sliding bed, and a breakaway MRI machine that opens up to demonstrate the rotating magnet so that the patient can see the entire experience up close before the process begins.

“This is exactly the kind of compassionate, patient-centered care we want to bring into every corner of RMC,” said Keith Parrott, CEO of RMC. “It’s a small addition that can make a big difference on a hard day.”

The Final BEE and DAISY of 2025 – How Unit 8West is Defining the Standard of Care at RMC

Exceptional patient care is the cornerstone of what we aim to achieve each and every day here at Regional Medical Center. For some, that high expectation is not enough, and our incredible staff finds a way to go above and beyond for those under their care.

Each quarter, we present the BEE Award to one outstanding staff member  and the DAISY Award to one and one amazing nurse. This most recent cycle is a first, even for RMC; both winners were from the same unit!

Savannah Rodabaugh, Patient Care Tech, and Hailey Swink, Nurse both serve on our 8 West Medical / Surgical for pre and post operative care. Unit Nurse Manager Michelle Bain put it best, “It’s truly a blessing to come to work everyday with staff that give it their all – this is a wonderful crew and I am so excited they are receiving the recognition they deserve.”

Savannah has been with RMC for 2 ½ years as a Patient Care Tech and truly considers her RMC family a home away from home. Being the 10th of 12 siblings, Savannah is no stranger to fostering a sense of community, even if it is, at times, very chaotic!

Savannah also comes from a long line of those who live life with a servant’s heart – her mother served as a firefighter and nurse, her sister and two aunts also serve as nurses, and her grandfather was one of the first paramedics ever to serve in the state of Missouri.

When asked about her favorite part of the job, Savannah said “I really enjoy actually interacting with the staff and especially the patients; learning about who they are and not just their chart.”

Savannah is planning on continuing her healthcare journey this fall by attending nursing school at Jacksonville State University with the goal of becoming an ER/Trauma nurse in the near future.

Hailey Swink started her nursing career as a student at Gadsden State Community College and after graduation, has been working at RMC now for almost 2 years after completing the Student Nurse Apprenticeship program.

Working in the diverse environment of the Medical / Surgical floor, Hailey’s coworkers describe her as “amazingly sweet” and “places patient care above all else.” Those words ring true, as Hailey has been nominated for the Daisy Award every single quarter she has worked with RMC.

Hailey attributes her compassion and consistency to the relationship with her mother, both in showing and receiving care.

“My mom was a nurse who inspired me and shaped my future,” Hailey said. “I lost my mom to COVID-19 five years ago, but she had been at RMC several times before; seeing the care she received each time she was here further confirmed that this is where I wanted to be.”

When asked further about challenges of healthcare, Hailey said “It’s patient first every day – regardless of your internal challenges, you have to leave the outside at the door. Our patients choose RMC, so it’s our responsibility to provide the best care, even when it’s difficult personally.”

Congratulations, Savannah and Hailey, from your entire RMC family on exhibiting what it truly means to be a BEE and a DAISY – by  providing consistent, exceptional care to our patients.

Partnership to Bring Freestanding Emergency Department to Jacksonville Enters Next Phase

JACKSONVILLE, AL (12/09/2025) The Health Care Authority of the City of Anniston (RMC), Jacksonville State University (Jax State), the City of Jacksonville, and Developer Solutions and Facilities Development Company (DSF) are working collaboratively to expand emergency healthcare for the citizens of Jacksonville and surrounding areas by moving forward with plans to construct a free-standing emergency department (FED) within the City of Jacksonville.

On Nov. 5, 2025, RMC filed a formal Letter of Intent (LOI) with the Alabama Certificate of Need (CON) Review Board for the construction of a Freestanding Emergency Department on Jax State’s campus in Jacksonville, AL. Mayor Jones and the Jacksonville City Council have welcomed the project’s progress and the partnership between RMC and Jax State that continues to strengthen the Jacksonville community.

“On behalf of the city of Jacksonville, we’d like to thank Jacksonville State University and Regional Medical Center for their commitment to making a free-standing emergency room become a reality for our community,” said Mayor of Jacksonville Mark Jones. “This delivers on our commitment to bring quality emergency care to the people of Jacksonville, providing faster response times when seconds count. We look forward to working together on this significant project.”

This partnership represents a significant investment in the health and well-being of Jacksonville residents, as well as a major enhancement to emergency and primary care access for Jacksonville State’s faculty, staff, and students.

Jax State is uniquely positioned to help bring this project to life. The university’s long-standing partnership with RMC, particularly through the Jax State College of Health Professions and Wellness, has created valuable opportunities for hands-on training and collaboration in a fast-paced and real-world clinical setting.

A portion of this proposed 17,000-square-foot facility would relocate the RMC Student Health Center at Jax State from its current location on the south side of Jacksonville to a wing of the new construction. The site is set to be located directly across Highway 21 from Hugh Merrill Hall on the north side of campus, the plot adjacent to the previously announced new Jacksonville Fire Station #2.

“This project is another example of what can happen when Jax State, RMC, and the City of Jacksonville work together toward a shared goal,” said Dr. Don C. Killingsworth, Jr., President of Jacksonville State University. “We’re grateful for the leadership of Mayor Jones and the City of Jacksonville, and for RMC’s continued collaboration and shared commitment to addressing a critical need for expanded emergency care in our community. Together, we’re working to strengthen healthcare access for our campus and for the people of Jacksonville.”

RMC leaders echoed that sentiment, emphasizing the project’s importance in meeting the growing demand for emergency care across Calhoun County.

“One of the most consistent pieces of feedback we’ve received from patients is about emergency department wait times. Over the past several months, we’ve made tremendous progress, reducing the time it takes for patients to see a provider by 26% and decreasing wait times for admitted patients by 29%. Our wait times are now below national averages. This new location in Jacksonville would further alleviate demand at our Anniston facility while providing faster access to high-quality care closer to home for many residents,” said Keith Parrott, President of Regional Medical Center.

In addition to supporting this improvement in emergency care, the Board of Regional Medical Center has not only approved this venture but also a $7M capital budget for FY2026 to continue advancing patient care and safety across all RMC Health System campuses.

The project will undergo state review through the Alabama CON Board. The estimated construction time, including approvals, design, and construction, is projected to take 20-24 months, with an anticipated completion in Spring 2028.

“We are excited about the opportunity to fill an important gap in patient care and provide better healthcare access to the people of Jacksonville and surrounding communities with this Free-Standing Emergency Department,” says Parrott. “I am deeply grateful for the support and collaboration of Jacksonville’s former Mayor Johnny Smith, current Mayor Mark Jones, City Council President Terry Wilson, and Dr. Killingsworth of Jax State. Their combined efforts have been instrumental in advancing RMC’s vision to expand emergency care access for the community and strengthen primary care services for Jax State.”

Manage Holiday Stress with these Five Tips from RMC’s own Dr. Carpenter

By Paul Carpenter, D.O., RMC Hospitalist Medical Director

The holiday season is a joyful time filled with celebrations, family gatherings, and giving. However, it can also bring about increased stress, anxiety, and overwhelm. At RMC Health System, we understand how challenging these feelings can be, especially during busy times. To help you stay balanced and healthy this holiday season, Dr. Paul Carpenter shares five practical tips to manage holiday stress effectively.

1. Prioritize Self-Care

Amid the hustle and bustle, don’t forget to take time for yourself. Whether it’s a short walk, listening to calming music, or practicing deep breathing exercises, prioritize activities that help you relax and recharge. Remember, taking care of yourself is essential for handling stress better.

2. Set Realistic Expectations

Holidays often come with high expectations for perfect celebrations and gift-giving. Recognize that imperfection is okay. Focus on enjoying time with loved ones rather than meeting every ideal. Setting realistic goals reduces pressure and helps you embrace the true spirit of the season.

3. Maintain Healthy Boundaries

It’s easy to become overwhelmed by family commitments or social obligations. Learn to say no when necessary, and don’t overcommit yourself. Respect your limits and communicate your needs clearly to avoid burnout.

4. Stay Connected to Support

If feelings of stress or sadness become overwhelming, reach out for support. Whether talking with a trusted friend, family member, or mental health professional, sharing your feelings can lessen their burden. RMC’s behavioral health programs are here to support you—more info can be found here.

5. Practice Mindfulness and Gratitude

Take a moment each day to focus on the present and reflect on what you’re grateful for. Mindfulness techniques, such as meditation or deep breathing, can lower stress levels and foster a sense of calm and appreciation.

Remember, managing holiday stress is about finding balance and being kind to yourself. If you’re feeling overwhelmed or need extra support, don’t hesitate to reach out to RMC’s Behavioral Health Services by calling (256) 741-6464. We’re here to help you enjoy a healthier, happier holiday season.

Wishing you peace and joy this holiday season from all of us at RMC Health System!

4 DASH Diet Recipes for the Holidays

The holiday season is a time for celebration, family, and delicious food. However, maintaining a
healthy diet can be challenging while enjoying all of the festive treats. The DASH (Dietary
Approaches to Stop Hypertension) diet is a great way to enjoy flavorful meals while supporting
heart health and managing blood pressure.

Here are four tasty and nutritious DASH-friendly recipes, recommended by the National Heart,
Lung and Blood Institute (NIH), to enjoy during the holiday season.

  1. Parmesan Green Beans: A healthy side so tasty, you won’t even need to hide your
vegetables in your kids’ food to get them to eat it.
  2. Homemade Turkey Soup: Don’t let your leftover holiday turkey go to waste! Make this
delicious, from-scratch soup to enjoy the next day.
  3. Pumpkin Pie: A heart-healthy, easy-to-prepare version of this holiday classic, so you can
indulge in dessert without the guilt.
  4. Winter Crisp: A tart and tangy fruit dessert that your holiday guests will enjoy on a cold
    winter night.

Each of these recipes incorporates the principles of the DASH diet, which is rich in fruits,
vegetables, lean proteins, and whole grains. Celebrate the holidays guilt-free and support your
heart health this holiday season!

Care at the Heart of Our Community: Nurse Practitioner Week 2025

This week, Regional Medical Center (RMC) joins communities across the nation in celebrating Nurse Practitioner Appreciation and Awareness Week; a time to recognize the compassionate professionals who play a vital role in the healthcare system. Nurse Practitioners (NPs) are more than just healthcare providers; they’re trusted partners in health and wellness.

They listen, guide, and care with a personal touch that helps patients feel seen and supported. In our community, Nurse Practitioners make a difference every day by improving access to care, promoting preventive health, and helping people live their healthiest lives close to home.

As we celebrate this special week, RMC would like to highlight two outstanding NPs who serve their community daily: Nathan and Kassie.

After graduating from nearby Jacksonville State University (Jax St), Nathan started his career at RMC, spending four years as a technician and working his way up to nursing in our Emergency Department. He then returned to Jax St. to continue his education, discovering his true passion in healthcare, endocrinology, during his graduate studies.

Working daily helping patients manage long-term health conditions such as diabetes or thyroid disease, Nathan is no stranger to patient care and advocacy. “I enjoy building long-term patient relationships,” he says. “These are complex, chronic conditions, and I enjoy being part of a patient’s advanced care plan and educating them while finding solutions.”

Kassie began her healthcare journey in Birmingham, AL, as a Cardiac ICU nurse after graduating from University of Alabama Birmingham (UAB). She then moved to Anniston and worked as an ER nurse at RMC for two years before continuing her education at University of Alabama Huntsville (UAH).

After earning her degree with a focus and interest in family medicine, she found her calling working with patients experiencing mental health issues. “I had a strong desire to help those who feel vulnerable, and I was able to connect most with patients who struggled mentally,” Kassie said. “I wanted to do my part to create an environment free from stigma or embarrassment around mental health.”

Now that her calling is fulfilled, Kassie returned to RMC, where she has been working in our ER and Phycology Department for the past three years. “It really felt like I was home when I came back. The entire staff and administration are exceptional and always foster an environment of growth and success.”

Thank you, to all of our Nurse Practitioners who work with RMC Health System each and every day to keep our communities healthy!

World Pneumonia Day: “Breathing Life into Every Moment”

Today, we wear a blue ribbon to recognize World Pneumonia Day, a global effort to raise awareness about one of the leading causes of death in children and adults worldwide. Pneumonia is an infection that inflames the air sacs in one or both lungs, making it difficult for the body to get the oxygen it needs.

It can be caused by bacteria, viruses, or fungi, and while preventable and treatable, it still claims millions of lives each year. Children, elderly, and those with weakened immune systems are most at risk. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), signs and symptoms of pneumonia may include:

  • Cough
  • Shortness of breath
  • Fever, sweating and shaking chills
  • Fatigue
  • Chest pain
  • Nausea, vomiting or diarrhea
  • Confusion, especially in older adults

During the winter months, when there is often an uptick in pneumonia cases, many patients may end up requiring mechanical ventilation if it is not caught early.

At Regional Medical Center, our Respiratory Therapists (RTs) stand on the front lines when pneumonia strikes. RTs play a vital role in the treatment and recovery of patients fighting this serious illness. Our RTs not only bring skill and science, but also compassion, calm, and hope to patients in their most vulnerable moments. Every time a pneumonia patient takes an easier breath or a worried family member takes a sigh of relief, there’s often a Respiratory Therapist standing quietly in the background making that possible.

On this World Pneumonia Day, let us renew our commitment to education, prevention, vaccination, and early detection.  Most importantly, let us recognize and thank the Respiratory Therapists whose hands, hearts, and knowledge help patients breathe easier; today and every day.

Together, we can make pneumonia preventable and curable for everyone, everywhere.

A Little Dash of Care – The Impact of the Right Meal at the Right Time

At RMC Health System, we have the honor of sharing in life’s most meaningful moments, and few are as joyful as the arrival of a new baby. Ali and his wife recently welcomed their baby boy, Seyid Semih, into the world right here at RMC. The birth marked her fourth C-section, and the family says they felt “looked after like royalty” throughout their four-day stay.

“The level of care we received was beyond anything we imagined,” Ali wrote. “The staff visited our room countless times day and night—I honestly lost count! Their attention and kindness made us feel truly safe and supported.”

Among all the team members who made an impression, one in particular stood out: Camille, a member of RMC’s nutrition staff. Knowing the family follows a halal diet, Camille took extra steps to ensure they had meals that met their needs. “She went above and beyond to find meals that worked for us,” Ali shared. “We were so touched by her effort that we left a small thank-you gift on our way out.”

“Food is personal, and you have to know what you are serving and how that meal will impact the patient,” Camille states. “It really does not matter if their diet is varied for medical, religious, or even personal reasons; nutrition is part of a patient’s care and that care matters.”

We join Ali’s family in sending our sincere thanks to Camille and every member of the care team who made their experience so meaningful. Stories like this remind us why we do what we do, because every patient and every family deserves to feel seen, supported, and celebrated. To mark the arrival of baby Seyid, the family also shared sweet treats with some of their neighbors. Their generosity and gratitude reflect the very best of our Anniston community.

“Thank you all for your love and support—it truly means the world to us,” Ali wrote.

From all of us at RMC, congratulations to Ali’s family on their newest addition. We’re honored to have been part of such a special time in your lives.

If you have a story you’d like to share about your care at RMC, we’d love to hear it. Stories like yours help inspire our team and strengthen the bonds of care in our community.

RMC 2025 Daisy Award Winner #3

Congratulations to RMC’s most recent Daisy Award Winner – Mr. Jay Echols!

Jay Echols has worked in health care for 26 years, the most recent decade being with RMC, and is currently a nurse in our PICU. With 5 prior Daisy Nominations, Jay is the model of consistency when it comes to patient care and always goes beyond expectations for those under his watch.

When it comes to patients in the unit, Jay says “It’s all about making a difference, but it truly is a team effort.” Although a humble man of few words, surrounded by his family & coworkers in celebration, he made sure to share his faith.

“I am nothing without God,” Jay remarks. Mirroring his words, Jay has truly shown himself as having a servants heart.

“[Jay] was waiting on her and introduced himself to us…had her something to drink and immediately brought a cold tray without request. She had ice in her pitcher before she got to her room…she has never had such great care as [Jay] gave…[Jay] is a great asset to this hospital & organization…” – excerpts from Jay’s Daisy Nomination letter – written by patient’s sister, an RN of 35 years.

Mr. Echols, from your entire RMC Family, thank you for your continued, outstanding dedication & service to the patients of RMC!

Beyond the Breath: Anniston’s Respiratory Therapists Keep Our Community Breathing Easy

ANNISTON, AL – October 2025 – While often working behind the scenes, a vital team of healthcare professionals at Regional Medical Center (RMC) in Anniston plays a critical role in the health and well-being of our community: Respiratory Therapists (RTs). These unsung heroes of healthcare are on the front lines, helping patients of all ages, from the tiniest newborns to the most vulnerable seniors, overcome challenges to one of life’s most basic necessities: breathing.

Respiratory care is a multifaceted discipline, extending far beyond the administration of oxygen. RMC’s dedicated Respiratory Therapy Department provides a comprehensive range of pulmonary services, working tirelessly to diagnose, treat, and manage patients with breathing and lung disorders.

Imagine a premature infant struggling to take their first independent breaths. An RMC RT is there, meticulously managing ventilators and providing life-sustaining support. Or consider an elderly patient battling chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), finding each breath a struggle. An RT educates them on breathing techniques, administers crucial medications, and helps them regain a semblance of normal life through pulmonary rehabilitation.

“Our goal in Respiratory Care is to treat patients with professionalism, expert knowledge, and using equipment to help them get well sooner and back to their lives,” explains LaTonya Woods-Smith, RMC’s Respiratory Therapy Coordinator. “Our team is comprised of licensed respiratory practitioners, many with over a decade of experience, and our director, Sedric Heard, has nearly 15 years in the field.” Our Respiratory Navigator, Shani Johnson, serves as a liaison between patients, providers and clinical care teams to ensure compassionate respiratory care for patients with cardiopulmonary conditions.

The daily work of an RMC RT is dynamic and demanding. They assess patients’ respiratory health through physical examinations and diagnostic tests like pulmonary function testing, which measures lung capacity and efficiency. They are skilled in analyzing arterial blood gas results, providing vital insights into a patient’s oxygen and carbon dioxide levels. This crucial information guides treatment decisions and ensures optimal patient care.

Beyond diagnostics, RMC RTs are adept at therapeutic interventions. They administer nebulized medications to open airways, perform chest physiotherapy to clear mucus, and manage complex ventilator systems for critically ill patients. Their expertise is paramount in emergency situations, responding swiftly to cardiopulmonary crises and participating in life-saving procedures.

Success stories abound within RMC’s Respiratory Therapy Department. From helping patients recover from severe pneumonia and return to their daily routines, to empowering individuals with chronic conditions to manage their symptoms independently, the impact of RTs is profound. Their patient education efforts are particularly impactful, teaching individuals and their families about disease management, medication adherence, and lifestyle modifications that can significantly improve long-term respiratory wellness.

The commitment of RMC’s RTs extends beyond the hospital walls. They are instrumental in community health initiatives, such as providing smoking cessation counseling and child asthma education. This proactive approach aims to prevent respiratory issues and promote healthier lives for Anniston residents.

In a healthcare landscape that often highlights surgeons, primary care physicians, and nurses, it’s essential to recognize the invaluable contributions of Respiratory Therapists. They are the guardians of every breath, tirelessly working to ensure that our community breathes easier, one patient at a time. The RMC RT Department stands as a testament to this vital commitment, providing expert, compassionate care that truly makes a difference.
