Meet Shandrika

In October 2013, at 32 years old, Shandrika Christopher found a lump in her left breast through her monthly breast self-exam. Following visits to her OB/GYN and then a general surgeon for further testing, she learned that in fact she had Stage 2 breast cancer.  As a social worker, Shandrika spends her days helping others navigate their way through life and its challenges. Now, it was her turn to seek and secure the help she needed to fight cancer.

Shandrika chose to have all her cancer treatment at RMC including a lumpectomy, chemotherapy and radiation therapy.  At her three-month appointment after chemotherapy, Shandrika received the best news possible: the “all clear.”

Throughout treatment, Shandrika was able to continue working as a social worker…tending to the needs of others. She reflects, with enormous gratitude, on the flexibility of scheduling treatments at RMC around her life, her busy schedule. And she is extremely thankful for the numerous physicians and clinicians who cared for her along the way, not only for their expertise and skills, but also for their time and compassion.

At RMC, our comprehensive cancer care program combines clinical expertise and afiliation with the Univeristy of Alabama (UAB) cancer treatment program with a personalized, high-touch approach to patient care. From prevention and diagnosis to treatment and support, we ofer individualized patient-centered, compassionate cancer care to patients and their families. Oncology Rehabilitation

Life doesn’t stop when a patient receives a diagnosis of cancer.  However, cancer can dramatically change your life. RMC’s Cancer Rehabilitation Program meets the physical challenges facing the cancer patient’s journey.  Cancer Rehab begins at diagnosis. Research supports that early involvement with a rehab professional and ongoing monitoring throughout cancer treatment can reduce recovery from months to weeks.

Let our trained rehabilitation specialists (occupational and physical therapists, speech therapists and lymphedema experts) help restore you to your fullest physical function. We are honored to play a role in your journey to full recovery. To learn more about RMC’s Cancer Rehabilitation program, download a copy of this brochure.
