Hyperbaric Oxygen Chamber

Ensuring patients heal quickly and completely using the latest advancements and techniques in wound therapy

At RMC, our clinical team is specially trained to help treat chronic wounds using one of two hyperbaric oxygen therapy chambers, or HBOT. The treatment is pain-free and simple. Patients lie inside an enclosed, pressurized oxygen chamber that resembles a large tube. Pressure inside the hyperbaric chamber is much higher than the normal atmosphere allowing patients to be able to breathe in 100% pure oxygen for a treatment period-typically lasting about 90 minutes.

Concentrated Oxygen Helps Heal Wounds

Using HBOT, higher pressure and concentrated oxygen allow more oxygen to enter a patient’s blood. When blood is oxygen-enriched it travels to affected areas of the body to help heal wounds more rapidly. It has also been found that HBOT may reduce the risk of amputation for diabetic patients. Our ability to fight infections stems from our body’s ability to call on oxygen to kill invading bacteria.

How Long Does Treatment Last?

A series of HBOT treatments are usually needed over the course of several weeks. HBOT may be especially helpful when combined with other wound treatments. However, HBOT is not right for everyone, including those who suffer from seizures or people who may be taking certain medications. Ask your doctor about HBOT and other options to help your wounds heal.

Hyperbaric Oxygen Chamber

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy chambers at RMC’s Wound Healing Center are used to treat the following chronic wounds and conditions:

  • Diabetic foot ulcers
  • Refractory osteomyelitis
  • Osteoradionecrosis
  • Soft tissue radionecrosis
  • Compromised skin grafts/flaps
