The Healthcare Authority of the City of Anniston strongly believes in the value of patient’s right to have timely access to their healthcare health information. Congress passed the 21st Century Cures Act to drive electronic access, exchange and use of health information. The law allows for Healthcare providers using FHIR and API applications to connect to patient’s 3rd party applications to gain access to their protected health information. The law was written for electronic health information. Not all healthcare records are electronic that depends upon the data set and format. The hospital will work with you to provide any paper documentation in another format. With that being said, some of these apps are not compliant with HIPAA laws and it is the patients responsibility to gain knowledge of which apps are compliant and which apps are not. Therefore, Northeast Alabama Regional Medical Center cannot be held responsible with any lost or stolen protected health information with the use of these 3rd party apps. It is the patients right to use whichever application to gain access to their personal health information. There are 8 exceptions in which the hospital would need to deny access which if this should occur we will notify you and explain the reason.
