What is Gastroenterology?

Gastroenterology is the branch of medicine focused on the digestive system and the disorders and diseases affecting the gastrointestinal tract, which include the organs located between the mouth and the anus.

What is a Gastroenterologist?

Physicians practicing the medical specialty of gastroenterology have extensive training in diseases of the digestive tract. They are called gastroenterologists or “GI doctors.”

The digestive system includes the 25-foot-long tube (our intestines) that processes food and nutrients, plus the liver, pancreas and gallbladder. These organs break down and absorb the food we eat so that nutrients can be transported into the blood stream and delivered to cells throughout our bodies.

RMC’s gastroenterology physicians provide these comprehensive diagnostic GI screenings and procedures:

  • Bravo PH Study
  • Colon cancer screenings
  • Colonoscopy
  • Flexible sigmoidoscopy
  • Esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGD)
  • Esophageal dilation
