The Information Technology (IT) team at Regional Medical Center (RMC) in Anniston may have a little more ‘pep in their step’ today, as a national healthcare industry publication announced today they ranked among the Best Hospital IT Departments in the U.S in 2015 for hospitals nationwide with 25 or fewer employees.

Healthcare IT News, an industry leading health IT publication, annually ranks Best Hospital IT departments based on nominations and ranks departments based on a number of criteria, including:

• Day-to-day work
• IT work unit
• Workplace culture
• Senior management and organizational leadership
• Professional development and advancement
• Direct supervisor or manager
• Compensation benefit and employee recognition

The magazine first launched this annual issue in 2011 to pay tribute to those teams on the front lines every day who are working to help their hospitals through one of healthcare’s most challenging and transformative eras, according to Mike Miliard, editor at Healthcare IT News.

According to Pete Furlow, RMC’s Chief Information Officer (CIO), for a relatively small hospital IT department of 20 staff members supporting a hospital with 338 beds, RMC Anniston’s IT department has developed a sense of camaraderie based on close communications and keeping an eye on the goal of improving patient care.

“Our IT department at RMC continuously looks at how we can improve not only technology processes and workflows but also how technology can help us fill any gaps we feel need to fill,” Furlow said. “We consistently reach out to the entire hospital staff, physicians and nursing staff to better understand how we can improve workflows and improve care delivered to our patients.”

Louis Bass, CEO of RMC, said he is proud to congratulate RMC’s CIO, Pete Furlow, and the entire IT department on this high recognition and honor. “The IT team at RMC have had to deal with so many complex issues in recent years as we all learned to adapt from paper-based to technology-based systems. From managing the rollout of electronic records, nursing documents, prescriptions, physician documentation and voice recognition technology for physician note-taking to ensuring Meaningful Use attestation and protecting the integrity and security of our patients, physicians and employee data every day, the RMC IT department plays a vital role in how RMC delivers healthcare to our patients and to the community. We are thrilled they are being recognized nationally for their hard work and dedication and congratulate each of them for a job well done.”
